Advanced Jazz - "0" Hour Jazz Ensemble Directed by Mr. Mark Nelson, Director of Instrumental Music
The "0" Hour Jazz Ensemble is the advanced level Jazz ensemble at Satellite High School. The group has performed at:
- Monterey Jazz Festival, California
- North Texas Jazz Festival, Texas
- Music Educators National Convention, Salt Lake City, Utah
- Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, West Palm Beach, FL
- F.S.U. Jazz Festival, Tallahassee, FL
- UCF Jazz Festival, Orlando, FL
- UNF Jazz Festival, Jacksonville, FL
- Lakeside Jazz Festival, Daytona Beach, FL -- where they are the only high school "Headliner Band" on the night venue
- North Sea Jazz Festival, Netherlands -- runners up
The ensemble has had selections written and dedicated to them from jazz composer/artist Tom Kubis and Tom Williams. Additionally, many guest artists have been hosted at Satellite including: Tom Kubis, Bill Prince, Jeff Ruppert, Richard Drexler, Per Danielsen, Richie Cole, Dave Steinmeyer, Ira Sullivan, Jeff Tyzik and former Satellite alumnus Christian Tamburr and Major Bailey.
The ensemble performs approximately 30 times a year and can be heard on the CD's "Can You Hear Us Now?" and "More Today Than Yesterday."

Intermediate Jazz - Satellite Jazz Ensemble Directed by Mr. Mark Nelson, Director of Instrumental Music
 Mark Nelson, Director Satellite Jazz Ensemble is the Intermediate level jazz ensemble at SHS. This ensemble works on style and refinement of curriculum learned in the SHS Jazz Band.
This ensemble also plays professional level literature and can easily be mistaken for a "top" ensemble in any other high school. They have also hosted many guest artists and clinicians. The ensemble has been featured at the UNF Jazz Festival, the Lakeside Jazz Festival and the Florida Institute of Technology's WFIT radio sponsored Smithsonian, April Jazz Appreciation Concert. Introductory Jazz - Satellite Jazz Band Directed by Mr. Mark Sunderland, Associate Director of Instrumental Music
 Mark Sunderland, Associate Director The Satellite Jazz Band is the entry-level ensemble of the Satellite Jazz Program. Students learn about jazz through performance, blues patterns, scales, improvisational classes, mentoring by advanced jazz students and work with clinicians and current jazz performers/educators.
This ensemble provides a solid foundation of jazz studies and it is not unusual for motivated students to "jump over" the intermediate jazz ensemble right into the top group at the end of one year.
The Satellite Jazz Band performs has garnered superior ratings from adjudicators. Auditions are not required. Auditions will be used for "chair" placement. |
